- **Event Description**: Join us for the opening night of Puanga/Matariki 2026 at Puke Ariki Museum, an evening of kōrero, performance and shared reflection to mark the beginning of the Māori new year. The night will begin with a welcome from Ngāti Te Whiti, followed by a special kōrero from Te Poihi Campbell, who will introduce Puanga and Matariki and share their significance within our local landscape and ways of living. 

The programme includes a guided moment of remembrance and intention-setting — an opportunity to honour those who have passed, reflect on the year gone, and look ahead with hope. The evening continues with a kapa haka performance by Te Aiotanga o Houkura, and time to view taonga of significance to Puanga and Matariki.

He uri tēnei nō Taranaki Maunga, Nō ngā iwi o Taranaki ki te tonga,Ko Te Poihi Campbell tōku ingoa. Tihei mouri ora.

My childhood was centred around marae life, whānau, and tikanga. As a cultural practitioner, I’ve worked with several organisations and now support Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa Trust. I’m passionate about Taranaki history, te reo, and tikanga, and I continue to grow my knowledge, including learning about celestial traditions.

Te Aiotanga o Houkura is committed to inspiring and empowering individuals to reach their full potential in the pursuit of Māori performing arts. This is achieved through the use of te reo Māori, tikanga, and cultural practices, alongside the integration of modern and contemporary art forms. We continue to uphold the values of whanaungatanga and embrace a philosophy grounded in unity.
